Random mutation creates alternative alleles/genes to be created

Creates genetic variation between individuals in species (intraspecific Variation)

Due to genetic variation, when resources are scarce environment will select characteristic/variations that give an adv. Also is a selection pressure

Individuals w/ characteristic adv. will survive and reproduce

Pass on advantageous gene/characteristic (inheritance)

Next gen will have a higher proportion of individuals w/ successful characteristics. Over time, group of individuals become better adapted to environment
