Data mining is the search for patterns and statistical dependencies (e.g. correlations) in large datasets. It differs from statistics in that it is applied to large datasets. In contrast to machine learning, which originated from statistical inference (feature prediction) and AI, DM originated from database research. Predictions usually rely on a form of statistical dependence. DM is a step in the knowledge discovery process.
