1.1 systems architecture
- user interface
  - command line
    - A command-line interface allows the user to interact with the computer by typing in commands. The computer displays a prompt, the user keys in the command and presses enter or return.
  - menu driven
    - The user is offered a simple menu from which to choose an option. One menu often leads to a further menu. Part of the screen may have an instruction followed by a numbered list of options to choose from.
  - Gui (Graphic user interface)
    - Graphical user interface is sometimes shortened to GUI. The user chooses an option usually by pointing a mouse at an icon representing that option.
1.2 memory
- Ram (Random Access Memory)
  - RAM is a fast temporary type of memory in which programs, applications and data are stored. Here are some examples of what's stored in RAM
- Rom(Read Only Memory)
  - ROM is memory that cannot be changed by a program or user. ROM retains its memory even after the computer is turned off. For example, ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again.
1.3 Storage
- Optical
  - Small and easy to move around Comes in different types (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, RW) Can be scratched easily
- Secondary storage drive
  - Faster than magnetic drives Lasts longer because no moving parts More expensive than magnetic drives
- magnetic
  - Cheap, but huge storage Can break more easier than solid state because of moving parts
1.4 Wired and Wireless Networks
- wired nteworks Computers can be connected through Ethernet cables which connect to the Ethernet port. Connecting hardware such as a router has Ethernet ports.
- Wireless Networks Wireless transmissions can be intercepted by anyone within range of the router. Access can also be restricted to specific MAC addresses, and transmissions are usually encrypted using a key that works with WPA (wi-fi protected access).
- Coaxial Cable
- Router
- Wireless Access Point
- Switch
