1. June 1941: Operation Barbarossa

   • Germans advanced very quickly
   • Soviet armies overrun + air forces destroyed
   • All territory gained from Aug. 1939 Nazi-Soviet peace pact lost
   • 5.5 million men, 5000 planes + 2800 tanks

2. Siege of Leningrad: Sept. 1941-Jan. 1944

   • Sept. 1941: Germans surround Leningrad
   • No running water, electricity or heat
   • 1 million russians died
     • Cold
     • Famine
   • Germans continually bombed the city
   • Nov. 1941: rations cut to 1/3
   • Jan. 1944: Red army arrives at Leningrad --> push back Germans

3. Battle of Stalingrad: May 1942-Feb. 1943

   • May 1942: German offensive to capture Caucasus oil fields begin
   • August 1942: Advance stopped in streets of Stalingrad
   • Feb. 1943: General Von Paulus' army trapped by counter-attack
     • Germans surrender

4. Russian Victory

   • July 1943: Germans pushed back in tank battle at Kursk
   • June 1944: Operation Bagration (russian offensive) begins
   • May 1945: Germans surrender+ Berlin captured
