Postmodernism

  1. Jean Baudrillard

    • Simulacra
      •  Explains the way in which simulations or copies that are replacing the real artefacts so that increasingly reality becomes redundant We can no longer tell the difference between the real and the representations of real
    • Cultural Implosion
    • Hyer-Reality
      • The media dominate our perception of the outside world - representing a world that is more real than that which we can experience.Media = hyper-realityReality encountered in the world is a pale shadow of this. Your mind loses the ability to distinguish reality from fantasy, and begins to engage with the latter without understanding what it is doing. Fulfillment or happiness is found through simulation and imitation of a transient simulacrum of reality, rather than any interaction with any "real" reality.
  2. Jean Lyotard

    • Meta Narratives
      • The stories that we tell and the facts we choose to try and create a narrative explanation of life. Religion/ Science/ History/ Psychology/ Gender/ Evolution/ Economics
  3. Parody and Pastiche

    • Parody aims to mock an original in a critical way. Pastiche is merely a stylistic mask.
  4. Intertextuality

    • Break up of traditional agencies
      • Such as family and religion, new religions and people dont care as much about family responsibilities
    • Class and Gender roles
      • Nouveau riche new money men dressed like women women working and men looking after the children
    • Fragmented Identities
      • We are made up of several fragmented and shifting identities.
    • Media
      • Domination of the media, means we want to become what we see, even though it is just a simulacra, as it has been edited and designed to perfection. it is an unreachable goal.
  8. Kitsch

    • Art, objects, or designs considered to be in poor taste because of garishness or sentimentality but sometimes appreciated in a knowing or ironic way.
