Animal Cell Structure And Organelles
Nucleolus
- Where ribosomes are made
- Ribosomes are made of RNA and several proteins
- They are a necessary part in protein synthesis
- Where ribosomes are made
Nuclear Envelope
- A double membrane layer that surrounds the nucleolus
- Dotted with thousands of nuclear pores
- Allow materials to move in and out of the nucleus
Chromatin
- Compacted string of DNA
- Found in the nucleus
- Chromosomes are formed from chromatin
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Performs the synthesis of proteins
- Transports many biochemical products
- Dotted with ribosomes - hence the 'rough' ER
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Synthesises carbohydrates and lipids
Golgi Apparatus
- To carry out the processing of proteins from the rough ER
- Helps with the transportation of lipids around the cell and with the creation of lysosomes
Mitochondria
- Performs respiration to produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphospahte)
Ribosomes
- Synthesise proteins out of mRNA
