  1. Task 8 ; Part 2

    • "Audience readings of media texts are affected by variables such as age, gender and social status." How might different audience members interpret a variety of music videos?

  3. Glorious- Macklemore

    • Theory in this music video is not that clear, however, we can see a couple of theories coming through throughout the entirety of the video. The clear theory is that of Strauss. His theory is about binary opposites such as good against evil and love against hate. In Glorious, the binary opposite is Young against old. The narrative is based around the grand mother in the video, who is 100 years old. Macklemore takes her out for the day and allows her to do what she wants, which involves activities young teens do such as egg throwing at houses. Obviously, this is not what adults do which ads humour to the video. Another theory could be Propp's character types. There are only 2 character types in this video, a hero and a donor. The hero being the grandmother and the donor being Macklemore, the grandmoher is seeking happiness and throughout the day, finds it by taking part in activities she would have done when younger. The donor makes the quest successful by taking her out and paying to let her do these activities. Towards the end, we see a theory contradicted. This theory was practised by theorist Mulvey and is called 'The Male Gaze.' This is when a female is on camera and is used to attract the male audience through the lack of clothing etc. In the video, there was not a shot of a woman attracting the male audience but the other way round. Towards the ending, a male stripper is seen woth his top off, suggesting that the gaze is for the woman. This scene also links in with the narrative and it could be for the wants of the grandmother.
    • The video was made for the Macklemore's already existing fan base, presumably. His fans are a mixture of both boys and girls as some songs are about men and others are about woman. Although the narratives are usually about people who are in there 20's or older, the majority of his fans are teenagers. As he has just released a new album with this song in, it suggests that the song and video were just for his fans. However, because of the popularity of the song and video, due t the unique and funny narrative, the video has now gone global and a new set of audience members have listened to it. Macklemore does not usually include exesive swearing in his music which enables a different kind of audience to listen to his music as it is upbeat and most of his songs have a very catchy chorus.

  4. Soundcheck-Catfish And The Bottlemen

  5. Soundcheck- Catfish And The Bottlemen

    • The only theory in this video is to do with Metz. Metz was a french man who came up with four stages that can be applied to genres. Classical, experimental, parody and deconstruction. Soundcheck fits into the classical stage. This stage is about developing the initial codes and conventions to the genre. Catfish And The Bottlemen are known for there alt-rock music and the codes and conventions for this genre are evident from the start. Many alt-rock music videos focus solely on performance, showing their skills off through actually performing the song. Usually this is down to a lack of money to make a good music video. Because of this, no narrative has been included into Soundcheck. Another genre code and convention is the use of dull, boring colours. The video is shot in black and white suggesting that the music is alt-rock or indie. As well as the video being shot in black and white, it is also well known that the band members dress in dark colours too. The reason why they wear black and use dull colours is to create a brand image where fans and the public will know who they are by just looking at them because we are used to them wearing that type of colour.
    • The audience for this song would be their fans. Catfish were not a huge band before this although their music had been advertised and promoted on video games such as Fifa. Furthermore, they also didn't over promote their album which the song was on and didn't put it all over the place. This again suggests that they wanted to keep their music to loyal fans as opposed to most pop artists who want their music to fit everyone and everyone to listen to it.

  6. All I Want- Kodaline

  7. All I Want- Kodaline

    • As there is quite a strong narrative in the video, Propp and Todorov theories come through. propp's character profiles are seen throughout the video. firstly, we see the hero. The hero comes across as a man with a werewolf who wants to get with a female worker. The villain character could be seen in 2 ways, one way the audience could interpret the villain is as the male workers, they laugh and make fun of the hero; leading to others to do the same and avoid him. Another way the audience could interpret the villain is as the female worker. The female worker clearly avoids the man and does not allow for the hero to talk to her. The female worker could also be the donor in the video, her looks and personality providing the attention for the man. Another character profile seen is the helper. The helper in this video is very vague but it's the people about to mug the woman in the car park. They help the hero and donor get closer and he fights them off, In turn, he gets what he wants as the woman gives her number to her.
    • Another theorist is Todorov. Todorov's narrative structure is also seen throughout the video in a very clear way. The equilbrium is at the beginning when the man and woman are just at work, although the woman is freaked out, it doesn't disrupt the narrative and once she has left the shot, the man gets on with work like normal.
