Sound Waves
Slides in this set (3)
-
- Sound is produced when an object or material vibrates forwards and backwards
- The frequency of a sound is the number of vibrations per second. The frequency of a sound is the pitch.
- Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz)
- Pitch is how high or low a note is and depends on the frequency of the vibrations causing the sound.
-
- Sound energy is passed from one molecule to another like a baton in a relay race in the form of waves.
- Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
- Longitudinal waves means the vibrations which create the noise all move back and forth.
- A vibrating object pushes against air particles creating a compression.
- The particles then spread out from each other (this is known as a rarefraction)
