- introduction to Pop Eye (Mr.Watts) and Mrs.Watts
- start see what society is like on the island - dived between the cultures (black and white)
- see hows mr.watts and mrs.watts are different form the rest of the island especially mr.watts being "the only white for miles around."
-
- Divide in society on the island - can see through the anecdote about Matilda's grandfather "when the man asked directions to the nearest shop my grandfather burst out laughing"
- Also show when the children watch the film in class "we all laughed -us kids- at the whites trying to sit on the ground as they would in a chair." Again can see the divide "us kids" "the whites" shows the separation between whites and them as well as distance. By using "us" it is a lot more personal and informal whereas "the" is the opposite very informal and detached, showing the separation between the whites and blacks.

Idea- Mr and Mrs Watts outsiders
- In chapter one you can see the theme of isolation for mr.watts being the only white on the village, but we also learn about how mrs.watts is an outsider too.
- The chapter shows how the Watts' are separate from the islanders, "soon the bush grew up around the house..sunk out of view of the whole world" here we can see the description of the Watts' house. The imagery used here shows how Mr.Watts and Mrs.Watts became more and more isolated from the islanders. The word "sunk" has connotations of unpleasant imagery such as being slowly submerged in water. This links to the idea that they have have been slowly forgot about by the island, by becoming more submerged in their own world. This idea is also expressed by their misunderstood actions "Pop Eye,looking like a tired old nag circling the well.pulled his wife along in the trolley"
