Karten in diesem Stapel (19)
- 1What is proactive interference? When a memory is distorted by something you have learnt in the past.
- 2What is retro active interference?Where memory is distorted by something you may learn in the future.
- 3What is anterograde amnesia? You can’t remember what happened after the incident.
- 4What is retrograde amnesia?Where you can’t remember what happened before the incident.
- 5What is displacement? When you learn a new piece of information, it has to replace an existing item of information
- 6What are the three basic ideas to explain the disappearance of information from the STM to the LTM?Displacement
Interference
Trace decay - 7Explain Milner (1966)Milner worked with a man who had surgery to cure him of epilepsy. He could no longer retain new information, he could hold on to information for a short time if he concentrated on it. His STM was time, but he could no longer transfer information to the LTM.
Milner worked with this patient for a long time, but every time he went to see the patient he had to re-introduce himself. - 8What were the practical implications of the Bruce and Young Study? We know that memory of faces can be unreliable in certain situations.
Therefore we realise that identity parades are of limited use. - 9Question TextAnswer Text

- 12What is a cognitive interview? When they take the witness back to the scene of the incident, or recreate the context to aid their memory.
- 13What is the definition of a leading question? When you ask a question that appears to require an implied answer.
- 14What is a practical implication from the study of interference? To improve Study Skills
- 15What is the hippocampus?A structure of the brain crucial for memory.
- 16What is the definition of context? The general setting or environment in which activities happen
- 17What is trace decay?Learning leaves some sort of ‘trace’ on the brain, a combination of physical or chemical changes are made.
We can say forgetting is due to a spontaneous weakening or erosion of the neural memory trace as time goes by. - 18What are the criticism of trace decay?Although many experiments support the idea of trace decay, there is no simple relationship between the amount of time that has elapsed between learning and recall and the accuracy of completeness of what is remembered. It all depends on what we are doing in between learning and recall.
- 19What did Reitman’s research show? That there is evidence for both trace decay and displacement. But the third theory of interference is in many ways an alternative to the idea of trace decay.
