Psychology (Sampling methods)
Karten in diesem Stapel (5)
- 1Systematic SamplingHow it's done: Every "nth" person is selected; (every 3rd person on a register.)
Adv: No researcher bias as method of selection is objective
Disadv: Only truly unbiased if number is used using a random method. - 2Opportunity SamplingHow it's done: Asking people who are available and willing at the time.
Adv: Easy, not time consuming
Disadv: Not representative of the target population, results cannot be generalised
Researcher bias- researcher has full control over selection of participants. - 3Random SamplingHow it's done: List of all names in target population, all assigned a number. Numbers are chosen through objective method (computer generator or pull numbers out of a hat)
Adv: No researcher bias- method of selection is objective
Disadv: Time consuming to obtain list of names, assign numbers and choose numbers
Sample could still be unrepresentative- could contain only women over the age of 40 - 4Stratified SamplingHow it's done: Identify different strata (subgroups)
Work out proportions that each strata make up
Choose participants from each strata using random sampling
Adv: No researcher bias- method of selection is objective
Representative of the population
Disadv: Time consuming - 5Volunteer SamplingHow it's done: "Self-section", participants volunteer themselves
Adv: Easy, volunteers come to you
Can reach a lot of people, everyone who read the newspaper the ad was published in for example
Disadv: Volunteers want to be there/are interested/being paid so might be more enthusiastic when doing the tasks compared to people who were selected- affects results
Might get a lot of the same type of people; eg. extroverts who want to take part.
