World Systems Theory

World Systems Theory

1. Wallerstein

   • Cant look at it from country to country - have to focus on the whole world economy
   • The Modern World System (MWS) consists of 3 capitalist zones
     • Core
       • exploits everyone
     • Semi periphery
       • exploit periphery but are exploited by core
     • Periphery
       • Exploited by the core and semi periphery

2. Developed because Frank couldn't discuss inequality of disadvantages between countries

3. Can explain why the periphery cannot modernise because they are being exploited by 2 world systems

4. ignores cultural and political factors and is economically deterministic
