Histology: Human Tissues

  1. Epithelial

    • 3 Surfaces of Epithelial Cells:
      • apacial surface: exposed to the body
      • lateral surface: side of the cells
      • basal surface: attached to the basement membrane
    • avascular-: they aren't supplied with blood BUT they are supplied with nerve suuply.
    • Epithelial tissue: lines body cavities & cover internal & external body surfaces; stain
      • little extracellular matrix between closely packed cells (very little white space between cells)
    • 2 Types of Epithelial Tissue: 1.covering & lining epitheliaum, 2.glandular epithelium
      • Covering and Lining: classified according to the arrangement of cells in layers and the cell shape
      • Glandular: classified as either endocrine or excorine
        • Endocrine: secretes hormones into the bloodstream
        • Exocrine: secrete products through ducts & empty at covering lining epithelium
    • 3 Arrangements: simple-1 single layer, stratified-multiple layer, pseudostratified-appears to have more then one layer
      • Stratified Squamous Epithelium
      • Simple Columnar Epithelium
      • Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
      • Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
    • Cell shapes: squamous, cuboidal, columnar, transitional
      • Simple Squamous Epithelium
      • Stratified Columnar Epithelium
      • Transitional Epithelium
      • Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
  2. Muscular

    • Skeletal Muscle Tissue
      • pulls on bones allowing body movements; voluntary and striated
    • Cardiac Muscle Tissue
      • forms wall of ehart, pumps blood through blood vessels; involuntary and striated
    • Smooth Muscle Tissue
      • found in walls of hollow organ like bladder; involuntary and not striated
    • Functions rpoduces movement, releases heat, maintains posture, supports soft tissue, moves substances:
  3. Connective

    • Loose Connective Tissue
      • Areolar
      • Adipose
      • Reticular
    • Cartilage
      • Hyaline
      • Fibrocartilage
      • Elastic
    • Dense Connective Tissue
      • Regular
      • Irregular
      • Elastic
    • Bone
    • Liquid Connective Tissue
      • Blood
      • Lymph
  4. Nervous

    • Function: conducts nerve impulses
    • Neurons
      • converts stimuli into nerve impulses and conduscts them
    • Neuroglia
      • do not generate nerve impluses but serve supportive functions
