Associative claims/correlations

1. Associative claims:describe the relationship between measured variables

   • meeting spouse online linked to be a better marriage (Cacioppo et al. 2013) "Talk deeply, be happy" (Mehl et al. 2010)
     • causal statements are not appropriate

2. Correlation coefficient

   • r (r= strength, direction)
     • r= how much x and y vary together/how much x and y vary separetly
       • treatment effect/error

3. estimating a correlation coefficient from a scatterplot

   • larger effect size =stronger relationship -> more accurate predictions

4. identify threats to a validity from a scatterplot

   • statistical validity, sample size matters, could an outlier be influencing the results, outliers matter more when the sample size is small

5. describe the logic of significance testing with correlations

   • statistical validity: null hypothesis significance testing and r
     • H0: there is no relationship between the variables
       • H1: there is a relationship between the variables
         • two tailed hypothesis
