1. The multi-store model

   • Sensory register
     • Duration: very short
     • Encoding: iconic(see), haptic(feel), echoic(sound)
   • Short term memory
     • Duration: 30 secs
     • Encoding: acoustic
     • Capacity: 7+-2
   • Long term memory
     • Duration: up to a lifetime
     • Encoding: semantic
     • Capacity: unlimited

2. The working memory model (STM)

   • The central executive
     • Determines where the information goes
     • Capacity: very limited. It can only deal with one piece of info at a time
   • The visuospatial sketchpad
     • Is responsible for holding the visual and spatial information.
   • Episodic buffer
     • It is a temporary storage system for both acoustic and visual information
     • Capacity: very limited. It can only deal with one piece of info at a time
   • Phonological loop
     • Stores spoken words for a limited amount of time

3. Long term memory

   • Procedural: Responsible for knowing how to do things
   • Episodic: Responsible for storing info about events
   • Semantic: Responsible for storing info about the world

4. Forgtting

   • Interference
     • Proactive: old memories disrupt new memories
     • Retroactive: new memories disrupt old memories
   • Retrieval failure
     • When pieces of info are stored in the LTM but are unable to be recalled as the correct cues are not available
     • Cues
       • Same or different context (environment)
       • State, the physical or emotional cues
       • Organisation, how organised you ar
