All it takes is 'few lines of print, a couple of faked photographs' how easily someone can be brought into existence- realisation there is no way to check validity of evidence- nothing is certain- 'Did not know with any certainty this was 1984' even is basic as fundamental as the date- suggests the degree of control the Party exerts over reality nd the historical record.
- 'Enormous furnaces hidden somewhere'
- Even secrecy within the building he works in- uncertainty of everyday surroundings.
- 'necessary to re-write a paragraph of Big Brother's speech'

- 'Create dead men but not living ones'

- Living in constant fear- Relief is in darkness but now no relief as they come at that time. Again constant uncertainty.
- 'No laws'
- How fear is created- Cittizens are always in uncertainty--Government is always unpredictable- not controlled by laws no need because of amount of fear and brainwashing- o need for laws as they do not seek obedience 'not enough to obey him; you must love him'
- Inner heart...remained impregnable’
- When recognising his powerless nature this is his comfort – so when he loses this he loses everything- so much on one thing -That’s when we know he has truly lost it all- shown in the last line of the book – this is what creates the impact of this line.
- not betrayal..only feelings matter’ ‘If they make me stop loving you- that would be the real betrayal
- If they let themselves give in to what the party requires of them then they have betrayedDespite all the ruthless restricitions on their lives- the Party cannot change the their beliefs and morals, which is what makes them stand out. -This shows they are naieve or simply blind to how much power the party has showing the true power the party has, as no citize is aware of the control they posess.. -Or, perhaps it shows how ruthless the party is in how its has made W + J resort to this their only hope for when they inevitably get captured which they know is inevitable- But because they cannot even rely on this- shows nothing is or ever was truly their own.
- 'ancestral pattern..petty quarrels ..football, beer and above all gambking, filled up the horizon of their minds'
- Although the proles are not really a threat- the party takes measures to ensure they never become concious of their poverty andpowerlessness.'they are helpless like the animals'This link of them witht he proles shpws clear dehumanisation - animals= the party cannot control
- According to Marxist historians, the lower classes have traditionally been manipulated through the encouragement of behaviours such as gambling, drinking and fornication.
- 'those nineteenth century ideas about the laws of nature. We make the Laws of nature'. 'there were the totalitarians as they were called'
- Refuse to believe anything is out of their control. 'The party seeks power entirely for its own sake' Try to sperate themselves from that time but the simple mention of them at any rate puts them in the readers mind
- EVen worse- admit they want the power- greed is unstoppable and uncontrollable- imblance of human emotions not just removal- OPPOSITE to typical convention- twist.
- Refuse to believe anything is out of their control. 'The party seeks power entirely for its own sake' Try to sperate themselves from that time but the simple mention of them at any rate puts them in the readers mind
PROPAGANDA
- 'endlessly plugged.. savage barking rhythm'
- Violent and vicious - No emotion just anger. Endlessly plugged- shows how they spread and persistently make people listen to it.
- 'monstrous figure of a Eurasian soldier .. expressionless ...face' 'muzzle of gun..magnified .. pointed at you;
- Not described as human- cold and fearsome, again links to war- soldier shows they want to represent every Eurasian person as a threat- Also muzlle of gu shows theya re ruled by fear- always at gun point and emphasis on that citizens are at governments mercy.

- 'coloured poster...too large for indoor display'
- Colour draws attention and brings it to life- stands out amongst monochromatic surroundings. Doesn't belong there excessive.
- 'so contrived eyes follow you about when you move'
- 'contrived'- poster deliberatley created for this purpose. Party want residents to feel watched and live in constant fear and apprehension.
- 'a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features' 'BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU'
- Similar to WWI Kitchener Posters- Orwell is building links between Oceania and reader to show similarities
- Orwell wants the readers of the time to immediatley picture Stalin- By introducing BB so early on we associate all the negative things with him being a dictator, and thus- Stalin.
- Capitals emphasise and stress the ohrase- make it sound like an aggressive exclaimaition- directly adresses reader so we can fully emphathise. first introduction to phrase 'big brother'- seems intimidating and paradoxical level of control with a 'btrother.
- scrape of her shoes...cries of children...roar of traffic...curiouslysilent thanks to absence fo telescreen’
- Such loud disrupting noises juxtaposed with ‘silent’ seems absurd to reader- gives a clesar indication of how loud and constant a telescreen really is. The noise of normal human activities seems peaceful to him – something he does not experience- However still indications something is not right in ‘curiously silent’ –curious- links to strange-out of place- something is not right
- 'endlessly plugged.. savage barking rhythm'
