Why did the USSR get involved in Cuba?

  • Cuba was the first left-wing country in the Western Hemisphere, and proved a strong nation after winning and defending Cuba against the Bay of Pigs Operation. Cuba was strategically close to the USA and so medium-range missiles could be fired from there and reach the USA within 5-10 minutes.
  • JFK and Khrushchev had a falling out over a dinner party in which JFK, whilst in a drunken state called Khrushchev a 'dirty Soviet pig.' And said that Cuba belonged to the USA.
  • Krushchev was good friends with Cuban leader, Fidel Castro and had helped him overthrow the government of the former right-wing dictator, Fulgencio Batista.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved as Khrushchev sent JFK two letters addressing the situation and negotiating details over the future of the missiles and of Cuba. Cuba was to remain independent and it would not hold Soviet missiles, however neither the USA or the USSR could directly invade Cuba again. The USA would have to remove short-range missiles from Turkey, however this was not to be exposed and would follow after the Crisis had been amended. a hotline was set up between the White House and the Kremlin and helped improve the relationship between the USA and USSR.
