Deviation from Social Norms Social Norms are unwritten rules and guidelines that are considered 'normal' behaviour by social groups. If a person behaves differently to these norms, they are considered abnormal. E.g. laughing at a funeral or homosexuality in DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)
Deviation from Social Norms Evaluation :( - Social Norms change over time e.g. homosexuality :( - Does not consider cultural differences
Statistical Infrequency Abnormal behaviour is whatever falls outside the most common statistics
Statistical Infrequency Evaluation :( - Some abnormal behaviour is wanted e.g. high IQ :( - Subjectively determined e.g. what is considered lack of sleep?
Failure to Function Adequately Abnormality is when a person is not being able to cope with everyday life or not being able to function adequately e.g. eating regularly, maintaining a job, washing clothes etc
Failure to Function Adequately Evaluation :( - Does not consider cultural differences :( - Subjectively determined e.g. normal to grieve, but to what point? When does grieve become depression?
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health Psychological health is defined in the same way as physical health (Jahoda 1958). An absence of one of the 6 criteria indicated abnormality. Criteria= self-attitudes, personal growth, integration, autonomy, accurate perception of reality and mastery of the environment
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health Evaluation :( - Does not consider cultural differences :( - Few people manage to meet all the criteria
