Periodisation was first conceptualised by Matveyev (1981)
3 cycles of periodisation
Micro - phases of training lasting 7-10 days
Meso - phases of training lasting 2 weeks- 6 months
Macro - 6 months to 1 year
4 purposes for periodisation
To avoid detraining (consequence of long season or poor organisation)
To take account of specificity
To optimise progressive overload
To optimise improvement in performance
2 principles of training that lead periodisation to develop:
Specificity
Reversibility
Define:
Linear periodisation:
gradual changes in training - aiming to peak for a discrete event
Non-Linear periodisation:
each week has a number of training sessions emphasising different elements - aiming to maintain a level of conditioning
