Flowchart

Spit Formation

Wesley Spearman Geography A level English

Flowchart content

  1. Longshore drift moves sediment along coastline in zig-zag pattern

  2. Once the power of the wave becomes too weak to transport the sediment, it deposits the sediment

  3. Over time, the sediment builds up and forms a ridge of sand (a spit)

  4. If the prevailing wind changes direction, the sediment will be deposited parallel to the direction of the wind

  5. Once the spit curves due to a change in wind direction, it is called a cusped or hooked spit

  6. E.g Spurn Head, Yorkshire
