Cards in this deck (28)

  1. 1What is a computer network? Two or more computers connected together to share information and data
  2. 2Describe a LANA local area network each device is called a node and is installed on one site
  3. 3Describe a WANWide area network that covers a large geographical area. They also use cables ,telephone lines ,satellites and radio waves to connect
  4. 4What are the advantages of a computer network?the whole network can be backed up centrally. Messages can be sent between users
  5. 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?Wiring can be expensive and security is an issue as a virus can affect the computer
  6. 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?NIC, switch, hub, WAP and a router
  7. 7What is the purpose of a NIC?An expansion card that enables you to connect to a network like WiFi using an Ethernet cable
  8. 8What is the purpose of a Router? It joins multiple networks together via different connection
  9. 9What is the purpose of a Hub?A common connection point for devices commonly used to connect segments of a LAN
  10. 10What is the purpose of a Switch? It connects devices by a computer network to receive, forward and process data
  11. 11What is the purpose of a WAP?allows wireless devices to connect to wireless standard like WiFi and Bluetooth
  12. 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch? The difference is how they communicate
  13. 13What is the Internet? It is a huge network of computers connected together
  14. 14What is the World Wide Web?The world wide web (WWW) is a collection of webpages found on this network of computers
  15. 15What is the purpose of a Modem?A device which converts the computers digital data into analogue data
  16. 16What is the purpose of an ISP?internet service provider: it provides a service for access to the internet
  17. 17What is an IP address?A unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
  18. 18What does HTTP stand for?Hypertext Transfer Protocol
  19. 19What is a URL?the address of a World Wide Web page
  20. 20How is a URL constructed?A URL can be thought of as the "address" of a web page and is sometimes referred to informally as a "web address." ... A URL is made up of several parts. The first part is the protocol, which tells the web browser what sort of server it will be talking to in order to fetch the URL
  21. 21What are the three different network topologies?Mesh Topology
    Star Topology
    Bus Topology
    Ring Topology
    Tree Topology
  22. 22What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?Advantages of a Star Topology
    Easy to install and wire.
No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.
Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.
    Disadvantages of a Star Topology
Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled.
More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the hubs, etc
  23. 23What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?Advantages of Ring Topology
    1) This type of network topology is very organized. Each node gets to send the data when it receives an empty token. This helps to reduces chances of collision. Also in ring topology all the traffic flows in only one direction at very high speed.
    2) Even when the load on the network increases, its performance is better than that of Bus topology.
    3) There is no need for network server to control the connectivity between workstations.
    4) Additional components do not affect the performance of network.
    5) Each computer has equal access to resources.
    Disadvantages of Ring Topology
    1) Each packet of data must pass through all the computers between source and destination. This makes it slower than Star topology.
    2) If one workstation or port goes down, the entire network gets affected.
    3) Network is highly dependent on the wire which connects different components.
    4) MAU’s and network cards are expensive as compared to Ethernet cards and hubs.
  24. 24What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?Advantages of a Linear Bus Topology
Easy to connect a computer or peripheral to a linear bus.
Requires less cable length than a star topology.
Disadvantages of a Linear Bus Topology
Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.
Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down.
Not meant to be used as a stand-alone solution in a large building.
  25. 25List examples of data that need to be kept secureID
    Bank details
    Phone numbers
    House details
  26. 26What is HTTPS and what is it used for?HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands
  27. 27What is encryption?the process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorised access.
  28. 28What is decryptionDefinition - What does Decryption mean?
Decryption is the process of transforming data that has been rendered unreadable through encryption back to its encrypted form. In decryption, the system extracts and converts the garbled data and transforms it to texts and images that are easily understandable not only by the reader but also by the system. Decryption may be accomplished manually or automatically. It may also be performed with a set of keys or passwords
