Working Memory Model

Jameela Princess English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Who proposed the WMM?Baddeley and Hitch and the WMM consists of four main components.
  2. 2Central executive- Attentional process that monitors all incoming data and allocates slave systems to tasks.
    - Has limited processing capacity.
  3. 3Phonological loop- Deals with auditory information.
    - Subdivided into: phonological store ( stores words you hear) and articulatory process which allows maintenance rehearsal.
  4. 4Visuo-spatial sketchpad- Stores visual and/or spatial
    - Limited capacity of three to four objects.
    - Subdivided into visual cache ( which stores visual data) and inner scribe (records arrangement of objects in the visual field).
  5. 5Episodic buffer- Temporary store for info integrating the visual, spatial and verbal information.
    - Limited capacity of approx. four chunks.
  6. 6Evaluate the working memory model.- Lack of clarity over central executive. Doesn't really explain anything+needs to be more clearly specified than just attention. Some psychologists believe it may consist of separate components, therefore WMM isn't fully explained.
    - Studies of dual-task performance. Baddeley et al. demonstrated increased difficulty of doing two visual tasks simultaneously than one verbal and one visual.
    - Clinical evidence: Shallice and Warrington case study of KF who suffered brain damage had poor STM ability for recall of verbal info but could process visual info (damaged phonological loop). Supports existence of separate acoustic and visual store. But, evidence from brain-damaged patients may not be reliable because it concerns unique cases with patients who have had traumatic experiences.
  7. 7Evaluate the WMM- Studies of word length effect support phonological loop. Baddeley showed difficulty of remembering a list of long words than shorter ones. Word length effect disappears when person is given articulatory suppression task which ties up the articulatory process.
    - Brain scanning studies support. Braver et al gave ppts. tasks that involved central executive while they were having brain scans. Greater activity in prefrontal cortex .
    - Smith used brain scans, diff. areas of brain active during verbal/visual tasks.
