Upper Cervical

Keisha Whisken Ortho college English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1CERVICOENCEPHALIC/CERVICOCRANIAL (C0-C2)- Shows the relationship between the cervical spine and the occiput
 - Injuries have potential of involving the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord
  2. 2Symptoms of upper cervical damageHeadache
    Fatigue
    Vertigo
    Poor concentration
    Irritability
    Cognitive dysfunction
    Cranial nerve dysfunction
    Sympathetic nerve dysfunction
  3. 3Atlanto-occipital Joint Between the occiput and atlas (C1)Principle motion flexion and extension (15-20 degrees)
Also performs side flexion (10 degrees)
    No rotation
    Atlas has no vertebral body
  4. 4Atlanto-Axial Joint: Between atlas and Axis (C1 and C2)- Most mobile articulation of the spine
    - Flexion and extension is approximately 10 degrees
    - Side flexion is approximately 5 degrees
    - Rotation is approximately 50 degrees and is the primary movement of the A/A joint
    - The odontoid process (dens) acts as the pivot point for rotation and is held against the anterior arch of the atlas
  5. 5A/O Joint LigamentsAnterior membrane: limits extension
    Posterior membrane: limits flexion
ALR Ligament: limits rotation & side flexion(stabalizer)
  6. 6A/A Joint ligamentsTransverse: holds dens against anterior arch of C1(weakens with RA)
Crusiform: holds dens against anterior arch of C1
  7. 7Vertebral ArteryStarts at C6 & travels through transverse foramen enters at cranium through foramen magnum.
  8. 8Common areas to become impingedC6 where it enters TVP
    Intertransverse foramen
    C1 & C2
    C1 & occiput
  9. 9S/S Vertebral artery dysfunctionVertigo
