Flashcards
Computer science - Memory & Storage
Cards in this deck (13)
- 1What is ROM?Read-Only memory. It can only be read by a computer, not changed (overwritten)
- 2What is RAM?Random Access memory. It can be read and altered (written on).
- 3What is EEPROM?read-only memory. That can be erased and reprogrammed using a pulsed voltage.
- 4What is the difference between ROM and RAM?ROM can only be read, whilst as RAM can be written on.
- 5What is the purpose of ROM?To hold the basic computer hardware settings as it is non-volatile.
- 6What is firmware?Permanent software stored in ROM.
- 7What is the BIOS?BIOS is non-volatile firmware used to initialism hardware when a computer is booted.
- 8What is the bootstrap loader program?A program that exists in a computers non-volatile memory. It is executed by the processor when the computer is first loaded up to read the hard drives boot sector.
- 9How does RAM work?RAM works by
- 10What is virtual memory?Sections of secondary memory that are used by the CPU when the computers RAM runs out.
- 11What is disk thrashing?A problem that occurs when a hard disk has a lot of wear and tear from switching from virtual memory to RAM. It slows down overall performance of the computer.
- 12What is flash memory?non-volatile ROM called EEPROM. It is solid and has no moving parts.
- 13What is primary memory? The internal memory of a computer (volatile)
