Chemistry
Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Use the Kinetic Theory to explain the concept of absolute zero.Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature where nothing could be colder and no heat energy remains in a substance. At absolute zero, a substance has no volume and no kinetic energy.
- 2Explain the structure of the atom in terms of protons, neutron and electrons.
- 3Write the electron configuration using the shell model for the first 20 elements. The amount of electrons in each shell of an atom in it;s ground state.
E.g. Calcium: 2,8,8,2
- 4Explain trends in 1st Ionisation Energy (Energy required to remove an electron) across periods and down groups in the periodic table.- Increases across. The nucleus becomes more positive while electrons are being added to the same shell. Hence ↑ electrostatic attraction.
- Decreases down. Electrons are being placed in valence shells further away from the nucleus. Hence ↓ electrostatic attraction. - 5Explain trends in atomic radius across periods and down groups in the periodic table.- Decreases across. The nucleus becomes more positive while electrons are being added to the same shell. Hence ↑ electrostatic attraction, pulling e closer.
- Increases down. Electrons are being placed in valence shells further away from the nucleus. Hence ↓ electrostatic attraction. - 6Explain trends in electronegativity across periods and down groups in the periodic table.- Increases across. The nucleus becomes more positive while electrons are being added to the same shell. Hence ↑ electrostatic attraction.
- Decreases down. Electrons are being placed in valence shells further away from the nucleus. Hence ↓ electrostatic attraction.
