Working Memory Model

Sam Ferstenberg English 6 cards

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1What did Baddeley and Hitch propose the central executive does?Supervisory function. Determines which information is attended to and directs information to other slave systems and collects responses. Deal with one piece of information at a time.
  2. 2What does the phonological loop do?Temporary storage system for holding auditory information in a speech based form. Stores word we hear, so plays a key role in the development of reading.
  3. 3What does the visuospatial sketchpad (VSS) do?Temporary memory system for holding visual and spatial information. The visual cache stores visual data about form and colour and the inner scribe records the arrangement of objects in the visual field.
  4. 4What does the episodic buffer do?Acts as a backup for information which communicates with both LTM and the slave system components.
  5. 5What does the case study of KF show?KF suffered brain damage and damaged his STM. He struggled with verbal information, but his memory for visual information was mostly unaffected. This shows separate STM components for how the central executive works.
  6. 6How did Baddeley and Hitch test the WMW?Participants were asked to simultaneously perform a digital span task in which they repeated a list of numbers and a verbal recording task where they answered true or false to various questions. As the numbers increased, participants took slightly longer to answer the questions. The verbal reasoning task is thought to make use of the central executive, and the numbers task made use of the phonological loop.
