Flashcards
Hardware
Cards in this deck (12)
- 1HardwareDescribes the physical components of a computer system. e.g. input, output, processing devices.
- 2SoftwareThe sequence of instructions, code or programs that a computer executes.
- 3HDD, what it is and about itHard Disk Drive: made up of magnetic plates that spin and a mechanical arm that reads the charges to determine a 1 or 0.
HDDs are permanent a secondary storage devices, and are non-volitile - 4Advantages of HDDs (4)Large Capacity, Faster than optical disks, persistent/non-volitile
- 5Disadvantages of HDDS (5)Relies on moving parts, disk surface easily damaged, Heavy power consumption, noisy, slower read/write speed than RAM
- 6SSD, what it is and about it.Solid State Drive: Uses microchips to store data using electricity, transistors retain 1s and 0s even after power loss therefore non-volitile
- 7Advantages of SSD (5)Fast read/write access, robust(no moving parts), low power consumption, silent operation, persistent /non-volatile
- 8Disadvantages of SSDs (3)Small capacity, very expensive, limited life.
- 9RAM what is it?Random Access Memory: faster than permanent storage as there are no moving parts. Data is loaded to the RAM then when the CPU needs it it quickly loads it to the CPU, speeding it up
- 10Advantages of RAM (4)Fast read/write access, robust(no moving parts), low power consumption, silent operation
- 11Disadvantages of RAM (3)Small capacity, Very expensive, Volatile
- 12ROM, what it is?Read Only Memory: Stores the Boot sequence as RAM is volatile and HDDs and SSDs are too slow
