Computer Science Flashcards

Cards in this deck (33)

  1. 1CPUCPU processes data operations. It controls the operations in a computer.CPU
  2. 2What is Fetch, Decode, Execute?Fetch - gets the instructions from the main memory and into the registers
Decode - The CPU decodes the instructions
Execute - The CPU executes these instructions
  3. 3Control UnitThe CU tells the computer memory, ALU and Input/Output devices how to respond to the instructions they are given
  4. 4ALUThe ALU carries out operations that are arithmetic and logic operations, it is divided into two units. The Arithmetic unit and Logic unit
  5. 5What are registers used for?Registers are a type of memory used to quickly transfer data and instructions.
  6. 6What is a clock? and what measurement does it use?It uses Hz as measurement
The clock indicates how fast a CPU can run
  7. 7What is cache? It is a component that stores data so that certain data can be found faster.
  8. 8Program CounterA program counter is a register that has the location of an instruction being executed. Everytime an instruction is fetched, the program counter increases its value by one
  9. 9MDRMDR holds data being transferred to or from the memory.
  10. 10MARMAR stores memory adress or data that needs to be fetched
  11. 11AccumulatorA register for immediate, short term storage for Arithmetic and Logic data in a CPU
  12. 12Von Neumann ArchitectureA design that most computers follow, the elements of it are; Data and instructions are stored as binary and the Fetch, Decode, Execute cycle repeats until there is nothing left to process.
  13. 13RAMRandom Access Memory is a type of computer memory that can fetch data in any given order.
  14. 14ROMRead-only-Memory is a type of non-volatile memory which stores the bios
  15. 15Virtual MemoryVirtual Memory is used when the RAM is full, programs which haven't been used in a while are moved to the virtual memory in the hard-drive.
  16. 16Internal Hard DriveStored inside a PC, they are one of the cheapest storage devices
  17. 17Volatile MemoryData is lost when the computer is turned off
  18. 18Non-Volatile MemoryData is kept when the computer is turned off
  19. 19Secondary StorageNon-Volatile memory storage that holds files and programs
  20. 20Optical StoragesCD
    DVD
    Blu-Ray
  21. 21Magnetic Storage DevicesMagnetic tape
    Hard disk drive
  22. 22Solid State StoragesUSB
    Memory Card
  23. 23Things to consider with storage devicesCapacity, Speed, Portability, Reliability, Durability, Cost
  24. 24CapacityHow much data the storage device holds
  25. 25PortabilityHow portable it is
  26. 26SpeedHow fast it can access data
  27. 27ReliabilityHow reliable it is, how likely it is that it will still be working over a long period of time
  28. 28DurabilityHow strong it is, how likely it is to break
  29. 29CostCost per GB, used to compare against other storage devices
  30. 30Computational ThinkingThe process of breaking down a problem into simple steps that a computer can understand to be able to solve a problem
  31. 31AbstractionOnly focusing on the important information
  32. 32DecompositionBreaking down a complicated problem into smaller parts
  33. 33Algorithmic ThinkingCreating a step by step solution for a problem or a set of rules for the problem
