Networking

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1Networking SwitchA switch has a number of ports and it stores the addresses of all network devices that are directly or indirectly connected to it on each port. It is used to direct incoming and outgoing data transmissions between computing devices and the cloud.Networking Switch
  2. 2RouterLocal Area Network (LAN).
A router will accept incoming data packets arriving from a connected Local Area Network, it will then read the destination address embedded in each data packet and work out which of the other LANs it is connected to is the best one to use for that particular data packet. a router can also block data if it's malicious.

  3. 3Wireless RouterIt is a method of networking that uses radio frequencies to transmit and receive data. it is the same as a router but instead of using a cable to connect the networks together, there is no cable required. It is only used for portable devices that rely on Wi-Fi connections to receive and send data from computing devices and the cloud.Wireless Router
  4. 4Fibre OpticThe cable has an extremely transparent central glass core, which is surrounded by cladding. When light enters the central core, it cannot get out until it reaches the other end because the cladding reflects the light - so effectively fibre-optic cable is a guided-light pipe.
A fibre-optic system works as follows.
    • The data is mixed (modulation) with the carrier light beam.
    • The beam is injected into the fibre-optic cable.
    • At the other end of the cable, a photo-detector senses the light and converts it into a normal electrical signal.
    • The signal is passed into an electronic demodulator to extract the original data
    it an transmit.
A typical fibre optic cable can send up to 1 gigabyte of data per second.

  5. 5Coaxial CableThis is a type of signal transmission cable. It has a thin copper core/wire about a millimetre thick. The core is separated from the outer sheath by some plastic spacers to keep the core in the centre of the cable at all times. This is why you can't bend the coaxial too much without kinking and damaging it.
The outer sheath is braided copper. So effectively it looks like a tube within a tube.
Co-axial cable is excellent for carrying radio signals. The lead going from the television aerial to your television is a co-axial cable. The lead from the satellite dish to the receiver is a co-axial cable.
Some data transmission cable is co-axial, although it is used less these days for that, as twisted-pair and fibre-optic cables are more popular.
    Coaxial Cable
  6. 6Twisted CoaxialA twisted coaxial is not energy efficient. Its the same as a coaxial but the copper in the wire, is twisted together. But more data can be downloaded using a twisted coaxial rather than using a normal coaxial cable. To replace the cable, it will cost a lot of money, a lot more to replace a twisted coaxial than a normal one.
It is less affected by external magnet interference.
