Flashcards
BIOS
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1when the computer boots, what is RAM likethe main memory (RAM) is empty and the CPU has no instructions to follow.
- 2What does booting allow?Booting allows the operating system to be loaded from the initial switch-on.
- 3What is the BIOS?The basic input/output system (BIOS) is a part of ROM that stores critical programs such as the program that starts the computer.
- 4What will the BIOS do?the BIOS will check the operation of the computer (memory, buses, input/output devices, etc.) and then load the operating system into RAM.
- 5what is bootstrapping?the program is run without user interaction and starts the operating system which then proceeds to load the relevant software required for its operation.
- 6what does booting require?booting needs to occur in small steps because at the point of switch-on the machine is effectively useless.
- 7where is the BIOS stored? It is normally stored on a BIOS chip on the motherboard.
The chip contains non-volatile memory: either ROM in older systems, of Flash memory in newer ones. - 8What does the BIOS contain? The Bios contains the most basic hardware settings of the computer and a set of instructions to begin the boot up process.
- 9what is the kernel?the fundamental part of the operating system which handles the input/output and processor/memory controls.
It is written into protected memory which cannot be overwritten by non-essential part of the operating system or other programs. - 10What actions can users perform with the BIOS function?Setting the system clock
Enabling and disabling certain system components
Hardware configuration
Selecting boot drives
Set password prompts for secured access to BIOS user interface function
