Cards in this deck (9)
- 1What is the Kernel? The Kernel is the heart of the operating system. It is responsible for looking after all the most low level hardware operations.
Applications make use of this when they want to operate the computer's hardware. - 2What is a Multi-User OS?A Multi-User OS is a type of operating system designed to enable several users to all access a systems resources at the same time. Home PC not considered to be one since two people cannot be logged on at the same time.
- 3What is a Distributed OS?A distributed OS is a type of operating system which combines the power of multiple computers.
- 4What is the operating system?Th operating system is the most important piece of software on any computer. Without it no programs will run. This is because an operating system is responsible for controlling/communicating with the computer hardware.
Provides a platform on which games, browsers, music players etc, can all work - 5What would happen if you ran something without an operating system?Without an operating system nothing would be displayed on the screen, nothing could be sent to the printer, nothing can be typed. Due to application software not knowing how to talk to hardware devices.
(The operating system does this. It can also talk to the application that is running.) - 6Order these: Operating system, Application, Hardware, UserUser
Application
Operating System
Hardware - 7Using an example, explain why an operating system is essential when running applications on a computer. (4 marks)Without an operating system, applications would not be able to communicate with a computer's hardware. The operating system bridges the gap. It gets the application and hardware working together. Without an operating system, a music player would not play any sound. The operating system would pass instructions from the application to the speakers to allow sound to play.
- 8What are the main functions of an operating systemInterface, Memory Management (paging, segmentation and virtual memory) Peripheral Management (BIOS and Device Drivers), Multi-taking (interrupts, the interrupt service routine, and scheduling)
