Flashcards

Radioactivity

Ilan Craig Core Science GCSE English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What is an unstable nucleus? An unstable nucleus is a nucleus with excess energy.
It may be a result of too many protons or neutrons.
  2. 2What do gamma rays do to an atom's nucleus?Gamma rays change the energy level of an atoms nucleus.
  3. 3What is the difference between irradiation and contamination?Irradiation is exposing an object to nuclear radiation.
Contamination is when nuclear radiation goes into an object.
  4. 4How do half-lives affect the risk of a radioactive source?Half-lives affect the risk of a radioactive source as it dictates the timescale of the risk.
  5. 5What is gamma radiation?High energy electromagnetic waves emitted from an unstable nuclei to stabilise energy levels.
  6. 6What are alpha particles?2 protons and 2 neutrons bound together in a particle identical to a helium-4 nucleus.
  7. 7What is alpha decay?A type of radioactive decay where an unstable atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle in order to increase stability.
  8. 8What is a beta particle?A high energy, high speed electron.
  9. 9What is beta decay? When an atom's nucleus wants to stabilise, this leads to one of its neutrons turning into a proton and an electron (the electron is the beta particle).
The proton is kept to stabilise the nucleus but the beta particle is shot off from the nucleus.
This occurs when an atom has too many neutrons and not enough protons.
