Flashcards
Atomic Structure AS
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What is the relative mass of an electron?1/1840
- 2What is the relative charge of a proton?+1
- 3What is mass number?Number of protons and neutrons. You can remember this by reminding yourself that these are the only sub-atomic particles with a significant mass.
- 4List the order of events in a mass spectrometerVaporisation, Ionisation, Acceleration, Deflection, Detection.
(Vicky Is A Dancing Donut) - 5Why is ionisation an important part of mass spectrometry?Ionisation is used to create positive ions, which can then be manipulated by electromagnets. (Acceleration and deflection).
- 6What does a mass spectrometer measure?m/z
- 7What is relative atomic mass? The ratio of the average mass of atoms of an element to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
- 8You have a very small abundance of ions with a low m/z. Why?These are double charged ions which act like they have half the mass of a singly charged ion.
- 9Complete the electron configuration for Mg+1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
- 10What is the definition for ionisation energy? The energy required to remove a mole of electrons from a mole of isolated gaseous atoms.
- 11Why is the second ionisation energy larger than than the first? The electron is being removed from a positively charged ion.
- 12What is meant by the term isotope?Element with same number of protons, different number of neutrons.
- 13How many neutrons are present in 52Cr?24
- 14How many protons are present in the element: 52Cr ?52-24= 28
- 15Why do isotopes have the same chemical properties? They have the same number of electrons.
