Chemistry
Cards in this deck (25)
- 1Name the 3 types of particle in an atomProton
Neutron
Electron - 2Does the number of protons equal the number of electrons in an atomYES!
- 3How many electrons are allowed in each shell: 1st shell = 2nd shell = 3rd shell =1st shell = 2
2nd shell = 8
3rd shell = 8 - 4what does 'electronic configuration' mean?How many electrons are in each shell
- 5What does the atomic number say?How many protons there are in an atom
- 6What is the mass number?The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
- 7What are the rows in the periodic table called?Periods
- 8what are the columns in the periodic table called?Groups
- 9How do you balance an equation?You put the numbers IN FRONT of the formulas where needed.
- 10What is an ion?It is an atom (or group of atoms) with a + or - charge
- 11Atoms with nearly full outer shells want to gain an extra atom (or two) TRUE or FALSETRUE!
- 12Name 2 insoluble metal chloridesSilver Chloride and Lead Chloride
- 13Why can barium sulfate can be drunk even though it is toxic?Because it is insoluble. It cannot enter the blood.
- 14What colour does ion give a flame? Sodium Potassium Calcium CopperSodium = Yellow/Orange
Potassium = Lilac
Calcium = Brick red
Copper = Blue-green - 15How to test for carbon dioxide?By bubbling a gas through limewater. If the gas is carbon dioxide, the limewater turns cloudy.
- 16How do you test for sulfate?Add dilute hydrochloric acid to a solution then add barium chloride solution. White precipitate of barium sulfate will appear if sulfate ions are present.
- 17How to test for chloride?Add dilute nitric acid to a solution then add silver nitrate solution. If chloride ions are present you get a white precipitate of silver chloride
- 18What are the two types of covalent substance?Simple molecular and Giant molecular
- 19If having strong bonds, what does it mean for giant covalent substance?They have very high melting points and very high boiling points
- 20Liquids that mix together form what?Miscible mixtures
- 21Liquids that don't mix together form what?Immiscible mixtures
- 22How can you separate immiscible liquids?- Shake 2 immiscible liquids together
- Let them stand so they separate out into layers
- Use a separating funnel with a tap to separate these layers
- The tap can be opened to drain off the lower layer into a beaker - 23What is the equation for the reaction of an alkali metal with water to produce hydrogen?Sodium + water > sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
- 24Halogens react with hydrogen to form what?hydrogen halides
- 25Halogens react with most metals to form what?Metal halides
