Cards in this deck (27)
- 1What is system software?Software needed to run the computer's hardware and application programs.
- 2What is the purpose of an operating systems?Memory Management
Provision of a user interface
Processor Scheduling - 3Give 2 types of system software and examples of them.Utility programs - disk defragmenter
Translators- Compiler - 4List the 3 categories of Application software.General Purpose- Word processor
Special Purpose- preform a specific single or multiple task
Bespoke- Custom made for a client. - 5What is machine code?First generation low level language which is written in 0 and 1s.
- 6What is assembly language?Second generation low level language written in Mnemonics and Hexadecimal
- 7Name the First high level language.FORTRAN(short for FORmula Translation.
- 8What is the function of an Assembler? To convert assembly language into object code that the CPU can understand
- 9What is the difference between a compiler and interpreter?A compiler will go through all the code and translate into object code all at once whereas an interpreter will translate every line into object code singly.
- 10What are advantages of Bytecode?Extra security layer
Platform Indepedence - 11What are the possible outputs of an AND gate?

- 12What are the possible outputs of an OR gate?

- 13Name the components of the CPU.Control Unit
Arithmetic/ Logic unit
registers - 14What is a bus?set of parallel wires connecting two or more components of a computer
- 15What is an I/O controller?device which interfaces between and input or output device and the processor.
- 16Define Interface.standard from of connection defining such things as signals, number of connecting pins and voltage levels
- 17Name an example of an interface.USB
- 18What is the store program concept?machine code instruction are fetched and executed serially by a processor that performs arithmetic and logical operations
- 19What is the function of the control unit?controls and coordinates the activities of the CPU, directing the flow of the data between the CPU and other devices
- 20What is the function of the system clock?synchronising CPU opreations
- 21What is a registersmallest set of data
- 22Give a type of a General-Purpose registerAccumulator
- 23Define MAR(Memory Address register).register that holds the address of the memory location from which data is fetched or written
- 24What is the function of program counter?holds the address of the next instruction to be executed.
- 25How are registers used in the Fetch-Execute cycle?Fetch: Address from the PC is copied to MAR. The address is sent to main memory by the address bus. The instruction are returned along the data bus to the MBR.
MBR content is copied into CIR.
Decode:Instruction in CIR are decoded.
Execute: Instruction is executed by ALU - 26What is an Opcode and an Operand?Opcode consist of binary which holds the instruction and operation.
Operand is the binary form for the memory location of the data to be operated on or the actual value of the data to be operated on. - 27What is the difference between immediate and direct addressing? In Immediate, the operand is the actual value to be operated on.
In direct addressing, the operand holds the memory address of the value to be operated on
