Flashcards
Connective Tissue
Cards in this deck (38)
- 1What is the structure of connective tissue?Relatively few cells - widely separated
Ground substance - 2What is the consistency of ground fluid?Fluid
Jelly-like
Rigid - 3What influences the overall properties of the tissue?Constituents of the ground substance
- 4What are the main functions of connective tissue?Connection
Structural support
Protection
Transport
Insulation - 5Where is connective tissue found? All organs supporting the specialised tissue
- 6What are the main structures present in most connective tissues?Cells
Fibres
Ground substance
Blood & Lymphatic vessels
Nerve fibres - 7What are the cells of connective tissue?Fibroblasts
Fat cells
Melanocytes
Leucocytes
Macrophages
Mast cells
Plasma cells
Mesenchymal cells - 8What are fibroblasts?Star-shaped cells
Produce collagen, elastic fibres and ground substance - 9What are fat cells?Store fat in small globules in cytoplasm
- 10What are melanocytes?Produce pigment Melanin - associated with skin and oral mucous membrane
- 11What are leucocytes?Small numbers in healthy tissue - increase when damage present
- 12What are the main types of leucocytes?Neutrophils
Lymphocytes - 13What are macrophages?Phagocytic cells - this is a motile irregular shaped cell
- 14What is a histiocyte?Phagocytic cells - fixed, irregular shaped cell
- 15What are mast cells?Produce and store granules of chemicals which are released if cell is damaged
- 16What are the main chemicals released from mast cells?Histamine
Serotonin
Heparin - 17What are plasma cells?They develop from B-Lymphocytes
Produce antibodies - 18What are mesenchymal cells? All cells of connective tissues are derived from this cell
- 19What are the 3 fibres?Collagen
Reticular
Elastic - 20What are collagen fibres?Very strong, tensile fibres with resistance to stretching
Colourless fibres
Small degree of flexibility - 21What are reticular fibres?Very fine, immature collagen fibres
Found in the basement layer of epithelium - 22What are elastic fibres?Yellow fibres
Capable of considerable extension and recoil - 23What does the ground substance do?Holds the cells and fibres together
- 24If the ground substance isn't in fluid form, what is it made up of?Large negatively charged molecules - Proteoglycans
- 25What are the functions of ground substance?Control movement of water, ions & molecules
Give structure to tissue
Bind connective fibres to eachother - influencing strength & function - 26What are the 4 types of connective tissue?Areolar
Adipose
Fibrous
Elastic - 27What is areolar connective tissue?Loose textured, mixture of all cell and fibre types
Rich in ground substance
Found supporting other tissues - also giving freedom of movement - 28Where is areolar connective tissue found?Under the skin
Between muscles
Supporting blood vessels
Supporting secretory cells in glands
Alimentary tract - 29What is adipose connective tissue?Mainly fat cells held on a framework of areolar tissue - close association with blood vessels
- 30What is the function of adipose connective tissue?Energy store
Thermal insulation
Padding - 31Where is adipose connective tissue found?Supporting organs i.e. kidney
Supporting eyeball
Between muscle fibres
Under skin - 32What is fibrous connective tissue?Made of bundles of collagen fibres tightly packed together with little ground substance
Mainly fibroblasts and fibrocytes
Cells lie in rows between fibres - 33What is a fibrocyte?Old, inactive fibroblast
- 34What are the two types of fibrous connective tissue?Regular - collagen fibres running in one direction
Irregular - Irregular interwoven bundles of collagen - 35Where can regular fibrous connective tissue be found?Ligaments
Tendons - 36Where can irregular fibrous connective tissue be found?Periosteum
Organ capsules - 37What is elastic connective tissue?Made of closely packed elastic fibres, with few cells, little ground substance
Yellow in colour
Capable of considerable extension & recoil - 38Where is elastic connective tissue found? In walls of large arteries
Vocal cords
Epiglottis
