Flashcards
networks
Cards in this deck (27)
- 1What is a computer network? Two or more computers connect together to share information and resourses.
- 2Describe a LAN?Local area network
- 3Describe a WAN?wide area network
- 4What are the advantages of a computer network? You get to find out infomation
- 5What are the disadvantages of a computer network?Need a qualified person to take care off it
- 6What devices are needed to produce a LAN?Network adapter
- 7What is the purpose of a NIC?Network inference card- The NICs convert the data signals from the nodes into data signals that can be transferred across the network.
- 8What is the purpose of a Router?Router-Routers work by sending data between networks (e.g. over the internet)
- 9What is the purpose of a Hub?Hub-A device that connects nodes together.
- 10What is the purpose of a Switch?Switch-A device that connects nodes together
- 11What is the purpose of a WAP?Wireless access point
- 12What is the difference between a Hub and a Switch? There are three main devices that work to connect one computer to another computer. A network hub, switch, and router can all perform this function. It can sometimes be confusing when trying to figure out what device is currently being used on a computer network, without knowing what each device does
- 13What is the Internet?A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols
- 14What is the World Wide Web?An information system on the Internet which allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.
- 15What is the purpose of a Modem?Modem stands for MOdulator/DEModulator. A modem converts digital signals generated by the computer into analog signals which can be transmitted over a telephone or cable line and transforms incoming analog signals into their digital equivalents.
- 16What is the purpose of an ISP?An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides services accessing and using the Internet. Internet service providers may be organized in various forms, such as commercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.
- 17What is an IP address?A unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network
- 18What does HTTP stand for?Hyper Text Transfer Protocol with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), another protocol primarily developed with secure, safe Internet transactions in mind. The acronym SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a secure encryption Web protocol used to make data safe when transmitted over the Internet.
- 19What is a URL?The address of a World Wide Web page
- 20How is a URL constructed?A URL can be thought of as the "address" of a web page and is sometimes referred to informally as a "web address." ... A URL is made up of several parts. The first part is the protocol, which tells the web browser what sort of server it will be talking to in order to fetch the URL
- 21What are the three different network topologies?Mesh Topology. Mesh Topology: In a mesh network, devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes. ...
Star Topology. Star Topology: In a star network devices are connected to a central computer, called a hub. ...
Bus Topology. ...
Ring Topology. ...
Tree Topology. - 22What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Star topology?Disadvantages of a Star Topology. Requires more cable length than a linear topology. If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled. More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the hubs, etc.
- 23What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Ring topology?Disadvantages of ring topology. All data being transferred over the network must pass through each workstation on the network, which can make it slower than a star topology. The entire network will be impacted if one workstation shuts down
- 24What are the advantages / disadvantages of a Bus topology?Bus Topology. Alternatively referred to as a line topology, a bus topology is a network setup in which each computer and network device are connected to a single cable or backbone. The following sections contain both the advantages and disadvantages of using a bus topology with your devices
- 25What is HTTPS and what is it used for?HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands
- 26What is encryptionThe process of converting information or data into a code, especially to prevent unauthorized access
- 27What is decryption?Decryption is the process of transforming data that has been rendered unreadable through encryption back to its unencrypted form. In decryption, the system extracts and converts the garbled data and transforms it to texts and images that are easily understandable not only by the reader but also by the system. Decryption may be accomplished manually or automatically. It may also be performed with a set of keys or passwords
