Computing Unit 2 Flash cards Part 1
Cards in this deck (26)
- 1What is an SSD and an HDD?An SSD is a solid state
An HDD is a hard disk drive
Both are used to store data within a device - 2What are the advantages of SSD?The advantages of an SSD is that they are:
- Robust
- Faster data access time
- Consume less power - 3What are the disadvantages of an SSD?The disadvantages of an SSD is:
- Initial cost is high
- Less storage capacity than an HDD - 4What are the advantages of an HDD?The Advantages of an HDD is that they are:
- Have a large storage capacity
- Cheaper (more available) - 5What are the disadvantages of an HDD?The disadvantages of an HDD is:
- Power consumption
- Not Robust (easily damaged) - 6Tablet uses SSD rather than HDD. Explain why SSD does not require defragmentation.SSD does not have any moving part, therefore, the files do not need to fragmented across the drive.
- 7Analyse how the features of SSD make them more suitable for use in tablet devices than HDD.SSD is more suitable than HDD as they are smaller and lighter than an HDD. Therefore SDD is more likely and able to fit inside a tablet device. It can operate whilst on the move (volatile/robust). This is due to the SSD not having any moving parts.
They do not consume a lot of power, thus leading to the tablet having a longer battery life. - 8What is fragmentation?Fragmentation is the spread/split of data on a storage device.
The fragmentation process can be reversed this is called defragmentation. This collects the pieces of data, rearrange them in files (fewer fragments). - 9What is the spindle speed?Spindle speed is the measure of how fast the hard drive platters of a given hard drive spin in normal operation
- 10Leroy chooses hard drive 1 for the use of the network server Explain one way the higher spindle speed would impact on Leroy's staff. The spindle speed would impact Leroy's staff as the faster the spindle speed is the faster the hard drive can deliver the data to the computer. Thus the productivity of Leroy's staff will increase.
- 11Recall the Hierarchy of StorageFaster
1) Registers
2) Cache
3) Main memory (RAM)
4) SSD
5) HDD
6) Removable media
Slower - 12What is Networked Attached Storage (NAS)A data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access
- 13What are the advantages of NASThe advantages of NAS are:
- Backups data
- Shared mass storage facilities
- fault tolerance - 14What is the cloud? The cloud is a place where people can store their data on other people's computers
- 15What are the types of operating systems- Single user, single task
- Real-time operating systems
- Multi-User
- Single user, multi-tasking - 16What is a single user, single task user operating systemThis operating system is designed to manage the computer so that one user can effectively do one thing at a time
- 17What is a Real-time operating system do?A Real-time operating system manages the resource of the computer so that a particular operation executes in precisely the same amount, every time it occurs.
- 18What is a Multi-User operating system?A multi-user operating system allows different users to take advantage of the computer's resources simultaneously
- 19What is a single user, multi-tasking operating systemThis operating system allows a single user to have several programs in operation at the same time.
- 20What is RAID?Redundant Array of Independent Disks
This automatically makes extra copies of any new or changed data using several hard disks. This prevents data loss if one or more disks malfunctions. - 21What are the RAID levels?- RAID 0
- RAID 1
- RAID 5
- RAID 10 - 22What is RAID concepts?- Mirroring
mirroring is the data on one disk is copied to another creating a replica, or mirror
- Striping
The data is written across multiple disks
- Parity
Parity is a redundancy check that ensures full protection of data without maintaining a full set of duplicate data.
(additional data used for recovery) - 23What is RAID 0?It has a minimum of 2 disks
The block is striped which makes it have excellent performance
There is no redundancy
This type of RAID should not be used for any critical system. - 24What is RAID 1?It has a minimum of 2 disk
The blocks are mirrored therefore it has excellent redundancy.
There is no striping or parity thus making the system have good performance - 25What is RAID 5?It has a minimum of 3 disks
The blocks are striped thus making the system have good performance
The block has distributed parity, therefore, the performance is good
This is a cost-effective option providing both performance and redundancy. - 26What is RAID 10?It has a minimum of 4 disks
It has excellent redundancy due to the blocks being mirrored
It has excellent performance due to the blocks being striped.
