Section 5 - Analysis
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1AnalysisIt is important to establish the nature of the need or problem before a solution is attempted. The analysis forms the foundation of the rest of the development process.
- 2The analysis needs to establish:- Exactly what the existing system does
- What its strengths and weaknesses are
- What is required of the new system
- Any constraints that may be placed on the new solution [e.g. legal requirements] - 3The main methods by which the analysis is carried out are:- Interviews with users at all levels of the organisation
- Questionnaires and surveys to record opinions
- Analysis of existing paperwork
- Observation of users of the current system - 4Analysis helps to:Identify key processes and operations and weak areas in the current system.
- 5The analysis makes use of formal data analysis techniques such as:- Identifying processes via data decomposition diagrams
- Mapping processes to data flow diagrams
- Showing detailed input/process/output via system flow charts - 6Deliverables at this stage could include:- Clear and detailed user requirements specification
- A list of tasks and subtasks that need to be completed, together with a schedule of timings
- A Gantt chart that can be used as a basis for project management - 7Other deliverables could include:- An assessment of the users' current ICT skill level and training requirements
- Hardware/software requirements and limitations
- Performance indicators or evaluation criteria
- An outline of the proposed method of solution
