is the composition balanced?	overall shape of the support/ picture -lunette -circular -square -cross -rectangle
asymmetrical or symmetrical?	is there a main focal point; is it to the left, right or in the centre?
do the elements form a specific shape? -triangle -square -oval -pyramid -cone	are all the elements linked or are some isolated?
is the image read from left to right; does this help tell the narrative?	is the composition open or closed? Are there any elements leaving or entering the composition?
is the overall emphasis horizontal or vertical? How is this reinforced, balanced or contrasted?	are there horizontal, vertical or curved lines or elements that conform to these shapes?
are any of the elements of a third line, or golden section?	is the horizon low or high and does this affect the view? E,g aerial perspective
are there any rhyming shapes within the composition? How does this create harmony?	How does the composition contribute to the mood or atmosphere of the painting?
