Computer science - Memory & Storage

Caitlin Brookes Computer Science English 13 cards

Cards in this deck (13)

  1. 1What is ROM?Read-Only memory. It can only be read by a computer, not changed (overwritten)
  2. 2What is RAM?Random Access memory. It can be read and altered (written on).
  3. 3What is EEPROM?read-only memory. That can be erased and reprogrammed using a pulsed voltage.
  4. 4What is the difference between ROM and RAM?ROM can only be read, whilst as RAM can be written on.
  5. 5What is the purpose of ROM?To hold the basic computer hardware settings as it is non-volatile.
  6. 6What is firmware?Permanent software stored in ROM.
  7. 7What is the BIOS?BIOS is non-volatile firmware used to initialism hardware when a computer is booted.
  8. 8What is the bootstrap loader program?A program that exists in a computers non-volatile memory. It is executed by the processor when the computer is first loaded up to read the hard drives boot sector.
  9. 9How does RAM work?RAM works by
  10. 10What is virtual memory?Sections of secondary memory that are used by the CPU when the computers RAM runs out.
  11. 11What is disk thrashing?A problem that occurs when a hard disk has a lot of wear and tear from switching from virtual memory to RAM. It slows down overall performance of the computer.
  12. 12What is flash memory?non-volatile ROM called EEPROM. It is solid and has no moving parts.
  13. 13What is primary memory? The internal memory of a computer (volatile)
