vittoria howard Chemistry AS - Level English 39 cards

C4

Cards in this deck (39)

  1. 1C3C3
  2. 2Labelled diagram of an atom...Labelled diagram of an atom...
  3. 3Where is the nucleus located? The middle of the atom
  4. 4What does the nucleus contain?Protons and neutrons
  5. 5What charge does the nucleus have?Positive because of the protons
  6. 6How big is the nucleus compared to the rest of the atom?Tiny, but almost the whole mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus
  7. 7What do the electrons do?Occupy shells around the nucleus and move around the nucleus
  8. 8What is the charge of the electrons?-1
  9. 9How big are electrons?Tiny but cover a lot of space
  10. 10What determines how bug the atom is?The volume of their orbits
  11. 11What is the mass of the electrons?0.0005
  12. 12What is the mass and charge of a proton?Mass= 1
    Charge= +1
  13. 13What is the mass and charge of a neutron?Mass=1
    Charge=0
  14. 14What is equal to the number of protons? The number of electrons
  15. 15What is the overall charge of a neutral atom?0
  16. 16What is the charge on an electron the same size as?The opposite of the charge on a proton
  17. 17What happens if an electron is lost or gained? The atom becomes charged and is then an ion
  18. 18What does the mass number tell you?The total of protons and neutrons
    (it is the top number)
  19. 19What does the atomic number tell you?The number of protons
  20. 20How do you get the number of neutrons?Subtract the atomic number from the mass number
    (Top - bottom)
  21. 21What number is always bigger?Mass number (top)
It tends to be roughly double the proton number, meaning there is usually an equal number of protons and neutrons in a nuclei
  22. 22What is an isotope?Different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons
  23. 23Why do isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass numbers? If they had different atomic numbers they would be different elements
  24. 24Diagram of carbon isotopes...Diagram of carbon isotopes...
  25. 25How many types of atom do elements consist of?1 only
  26. 26Can elements be broken down chemically?No
  27. 27What are compounds? Two or more different elements chemically bonded
  28. 28How do the properties of a compound compare to the original elements? They are completely different
  29. 29What is ionic bonding? The attraction between positive and negative particles called ionsWhat is ionic bonding?
  30. 30What is covalent bonding?Sharing a pair of electronsWhat is covalent bonding?
  31. 31What is the name for the vertical columns on the periodic table?Groups
  32. 32What is the name for the horizontal rows on the periodic table?Periods
  33. 33What is the name for group 1 elements?Alkali metals
  34. 34What is the name for group 7 elements?Halogens
  35. 35What is the name for group 8 elements?Noble gases
  36. 36What does each new period represent?Another full shell of electrons
  37. 37What does the period to which the element belongs to correspond with? The number of shells of electrons it has
  38. 38Labelled groups in the periodic table...Labelled groups in the periodic table...
  39. 39What do the elements in each group all have in common? The number of electrons in their outer shell
