Cards in this deck (8)

  1. 1What controls all the other components of the CPU and contains the decoder? The control unit.
  2. 2What part of the CPU does the Decoder tell to carry out operations? The Arithmetic logic unit.
  3. 3How does the clock control the rate at which program instructions are carried out?By sending control electrical signals at regular intervals, called cycles.
  4. 4Name and describe one type of Register.MAR: holds address of memory location currently being read or written.
Program Counter: Holds address the next instruction fetched.
MDR: A temporary store for things copied from memory.
Accummultor: stores the results of calculations carried out by the ALU
  5. 5What happens during the decode and execute stages?Instructions are interpreted and carried out.
  6. 6Explain the fetch cycle (include references to buses). The control unit sends a 'read' signal to the RAM on the control bus and uses the address bus to send signals specifying the required memory location in the RAM, this is transferred to the CPU via the data bus.
Control bus manages the information flow between components.
  7. 7What did John von Neumann design?A stored program computer where both program + data are stored in the memory.
Components = processing unit or CPU, program counter, memory to store data + instructions, input + output mechanisms.
  8. 8What does the ALU carry out?Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, comparisons between two numbers
