Question Answer
Courts of the First Instance Where a case is heard first. Low in Hierarchy.
Magistrates Court. A court of the first instance, trials most criminal and civil cases.
County Court A court of the first instance, hears civil cases.
Tribunals A court of the first instance, includes family court which trials divorce cases.
Appellate Courts Highest courts possible. Can only hear appeals.
Supreme Court. An appellate Court. Highest Court in UK.
European Court of Justice An appellate Court. Highest court in Europe.
European Court of Rights An appellate Court. Highest court for rights in Europe.
Leapfrogging the Court of Appeal Done when a case is of national importance, or when the supreme court grants case to leave.
Appealing Verdicts Case goes to high court or crown court if from magistrates. If appealed again: the case can go to an Appellate court. To get to an appellate court, the case must go through the court of appeal.
Tribunal system Part of the Civil courts and deals with agencies and employment. First Tier tribunal looks at all cases except employment.
Appealing Verdicts: tribunal system 1st appeal - Goes to Upper Tribunal 2nd Appeal - Goes to Court of Appeal Final appeal - Goes to Supreme Court Employment cases if appealed go to the Employment Tribunal appeal.
