Flashcards

CPU

Benjamin Laurin English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1What is the purpose of the CPU?To Fetch, decode and execute instructions
  2. 2What can make a CPU more efficient?Increasing the amount of cores,
    decreasing clock speed,
    increasing cache size
  3. 3What is the impact of multiple cores and why?Multiple cores increase the speed of the CPU because each core can only process one instruction at a time, so multiple cores means multiple instructions can be processed simultaneously
  4. 4What is the impact of RAM on CPU performance?Similar to the cache, it will make the CPU faster because it is very close to it, so it will take the CPU less time to retrieve the instructions
  5. 5What is the impact of the cache on CPU performance? The same as RAM, just it is the closest place to retrieve instructions
  6. 6What is the purpose of the control unit in the CPU?The control unit controls the input and output of data and monitors communications between the hardware in the computer
(similar to the nucleus in cells)
  7. 7How do you measure clock speed in a CPU?MHZ or GHZ
  8. 8What is the purpose of the ALU (Arithmetic processing unit) in a CPU?The ALU completes arithmetic and logic operations for the computer, such as typing in a word or literally everything else, as every instruction must pass through here
This is where the 'decode' section of the FDE cycle is completed
  9. 9What is the purpose of the registers (AKA the immediate access store) in the CPU?The registers are where the CPU stores all data and programs it is currently running
