Cards in this deck (19)

  1. 1How does RAM improve performance? The faster the RAM, the faster the processing speed. With faster RAM, you increase the speed at which memory transfers information to other components.
  2. 2Difference between RAM and ROMThere is one major difference between a ROM (read-only memory) and a RAM (random-access memory) chip and is volatile. ROM can hold data without power and RAM cannot and is non-volatile. Essentially, ROM is meant for permanent storage, and RAM is for temporary storage
  3. 3Purpose of RAMThe purpose of RAM is to provide quick read and write access to a storage device. Your computer uses RAM to load data because it's much quicker than running that same data directly off of a hard drive.
  4. 4Purpose of ROMROM is the memory that comes with your computer that is pre-written to hold the instructions for booting-up the computer
  5. 5virtual memoryMemory that appears to exist as main storage although most of it is supported by data held in secondary storage, transfer between the two being made automatically as required.
  6. 6Embedded systemsA computer built into another device, e.g. a Some examples of embedded systems are MP3 players, mobile phones, video game consoles, digital cameras, DVD players, and GPS
  7. 7secondary storageExternal data storage used to store data so that the computer can be switched off
  8. 8CacheQuick access memory inside the CPU.
  9. 9coresA CPU can contain one or more processing units. Each unit is called a core. A core contains an ALU , control unit and registers CPUs with multiple cores have more power to run multiple programs at the same time
  10. 10arithmetic logic unit (ALU)A component of the CPU that performs arithmetic and logic calculations.
  11. 11Solid state storageIt is non-volatile it is used for faster access
times and has no moving parts.
    -10-35gb
    -very fast
    -very portable
    -damaged very easy
    -last about 2-3 years
  12. 12Magnetic storageThey use magnetic field to magnetise small individual section of a metal spinning disc.
    -500gb-12tb
    -data transferred slow
    -durability is reasonable
    -generally reliable
    -

  13. 13optical storageoptical devices use a laser to scan the surface of spinning disc made from metal and plastic
    -640mb-50gb
    -data transferred very slow
    -very portable
    -dvds easily scratched
    -reliable
  14. 14characteristics-durability
    -reliability
    -portability
    -capacity
    -speed
  15. 15MDRThe Memory Data Register (MDR) holds data waiting to be written in or data read from the location pointed by the MAR.
  16. 16MARMemory Address Register (MAR) is the CPU register that stores the memory address from which data will be fetched from the CPU
  17. 17Virtual memoryVirtual memory is a section of volatile memory created temporarily on the storage drive. It is created when a computer is running many processes at once and RAM is running low.
  18. 18Clock speedThe clock speed - also known as clock rate - indicates how fast the CPU can run. This is measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (gHz)
  19. 19File sizesbit (b)
    byte (B)
    kilobyte (KB)
    megabyte (MB)
    gigabyte (GB)
    terabyte (TB)
