Business Intelligence

Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 1What is business intelligence?Methodologies, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information for business purposes
  2. 2Why do organisations need business intelligence?Businesses collect massive amounts of data
–Storage capacity is becoming almost unlimited, so businesses collect more data at little extra cost
–Need to provide the right information to the right person at the right time
  3. 3How does BI work?Integrating data (from multiple internal and external sources (different departments, customers, suppliers, market, etc.),
preparing data (methodologies to prepare the data for reporting, intelligence and analysis),
analysing data (using data analysis techniques)
  4. 4What is the purpose of a data warehouse (DW)?To store and catalogue data for BI processing
–This requires extracting and cleaning data from various operational databases and other sources → to improve the quality of existing data going into a DW.
  5. 5How does data warehousing work?Regularly copies data from operational databases to create a massive stack of historical data for analysis purposes
  6. 6What is the BI flow chart? What is the BI flow chart?
  7. 7What is the difference between operational databases and a data warehouse?Operational databases are used by various Information Systems across the organisationon a daily basis
Data warehouses are large storage containers, which regularly collect data from operational databases • Need to clean up data when doing this - Data Cleansing
  8. 8What problems does operational data pose for BI systems? It is "raw"; collected to meet an immediate business objective (e.g., generate a report) –Usually can be "dirty", hence unsuitable for sophisticated BI analyses
  9. 9What is dirty data?Incorrect(e.g. gender=B, age = 203) –missing values (e.g. postcode missing)–inconsistent:•Product data changes over time (e.g., different colors, versions)•Time-zone specific data in international sales –Inappropriate level of granularity •Toomuch or too little detail
  10. 10What are the three BI methods & tools?Reporting, OLAP (Online Analytical Processing), Data Mining
  11. 11What does reporting refer to?Integrate data from multiple systems
•Sorting, grouping, summing, averaging, comparing data•Example tools: Business Objects (Crystal Reports), Actuate
  12. 12What does OLAP refer to?Multi-dimensional aggregation and visualisation of historical data•Example tools: SAP Business Objects, Cognos, Hyperion, Microsoft:BI
  13. 13What does data mining refer to?Sophisticated statistical techniques to discover patterns and relationships•Used to anticipate events or predict future outcomes
•Example method: Market Basket Analysis (MBA)-looksfor items frequently purchased together
  14. 14Why is the OLAP method of rotation useful in helping decision-makers view information?–Quantities of each product sold in each region
–Quantities of each product sold within each city of a region
–Quantities sold of a specific product in all cities of a region
–Users can rotate virtual “cubes” according to the dimensions needed
  15. 15What does the OLAP method of drilling down refer to?Drilling-down allows users to look at a cube of related data in increasing depth, depending on their preferences (from region, to district, to dealership)
  16. 16What is market-basket analysis?A data-mining technique for determining sales patterns
