Device Drivers

Ariana Parr Computer Science A level English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1What is a device driver?A device driver is a piece of software that controls the hardware and importantly provides an interface so that programs can use the device.
  2. 2Why are drivers needed?Drivers are needed to allow the OS to control hardware. Without drivers, the computer would not be able to send and receive data correctly to hardware devices, such as a printer. Each operating system needs its own driver for the same hardware device.
  3. 3What if the computer cannot find a suitable driverost modern operating systems will go online and attempt to find a suitable driver online.
If the operating system cannot find a suitable driver it will ask the user to manually install the driver software onto the system.
  4. 4Give some examples of device driversPrinter drivers
    Display drivers
    ROM drivers
    BIOS driver
    USB drivers
    VGA drivers
    Sound card Driver
    Motherboard drivers
    Virtual device drivers
  5. 5What is a virtual device driver?a software device driver that emulates hardware and other devices so that multiple applications running in protected mode can access hardware interrupt channels, hardware resources and memory without causing conflicts
Virtual device drivers emulate a piece of hardware, so that the guest operating system and its drivers running inside a virtual machine can have the illusion of accessing real hardware.
