Chapter 2 - Processor Performance

Joshua Davis Computing A level English 15 cards

Cards in this deck (15)

  1. 1Processor PerformanceHow quickly the CPU can retrieve and interpret instructions.
  2. 2Clock SpeedMeasure in hertz, it is the number of cycles completed every second.
  3. 3CoresAnother term for processors. The more you have, the more cycles you can run through per second.
  4. 4CacheA small but expensive piece of very fast memory inside the CPU.
  5. 5Level 1 CacheDoesn't just work as instruction cache but also holds pre-decoded data and branching information.
  6. 6Level 2 CacheA memory bank built into the processor feeding level 1 cache but is slower.
  7. 7Level 3 CacheServes all processors and stores frequently used data to prevent bottlenecks from fetching from main memory.
  8. 8Main MemoryCommonly known as RAM, it is the main storage used by the CPU to hold data on applications currently being run.
  9. 9PipeliningAllows the arithmetic element of the processor to work along side the fetch process allowing for more instructions to be completed.
  10. 10BitsAn electrical signal represented as 1 or 0. 1 for on and 0 for off. Used by computers to read data.
  11. 11BytesA byte is 8 bits.
  12. 12HertzClock speed is measure in hertzs. It is how many cycles are completed per second.
  13. 13Assembly LanguageBasic low-level machine code.
  14. 14OpcodeUsed to determine the type of instruction and what hardware to use.
  15. 15OperandHolds the address of the data to be used, the actual data to be operated on or the data to be operated on may be passed to the ALU.
