Flashcards
Polymerisation
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Addition polymerizationThey are made up of alkene monomers, where the double bond opens up and join together. It is known as addition polymerization
- 2Problems with common polymersThey are very widespread and un-reactive which means they are very hard to get rid of and usually fill up landfill sites which have very bad environmental consequenecs
- 3How can we dispose of polymersWe can melt and re-mould some types but not all, we can burn them to produce electricity however some polymers such as PVC contain chlorine and produce HCl which is toxic
- 4Advantages of bioplasticsThey naturally degrade and therefore don't cause pollution, starch polymers for example get broken down in the environment
- 5Disadvantages of bioplasticsThey are very expensive and some still need to be collected so the right conditions for break down can be maintained
